Over the past seven years, Destiny has seen a fairly vast evolution, with its shooter gameplay encompassing a whole host of different experiences. But that has led to a lot of disparity. There are the complex, iconic, endlessly replayable endgame raids on one end of the spectrum, and the simpler, more by-the-numbers one-off campaign missions at the other. Across its lifetime, Destiny 2 has evolved to offer more and more missions and activities that bring those two experiences closer together, and with the upcoming major expansion, The Witch Queen, Bungie is looking to make more of the Destiny 2 experience feel like it is definitively, quintessentially "Destiny."That's according to Joe Blackburn, who formerly worked as Destiny 2's raid design lead and recently stepped into the role of game director. For Blackburn and the rest of Bungie, a major goal going into Destiny 2's next year of content is finding more ways to blur the line that separates the game's toughest, most intricate content, from the more casual, more approachable baseline campaign missions--to make more of the game feel like the sort of thing you can only find in Destiny 2."There's a suite of content that we feel like is definitively Destiny," Blackburn said in an interview with GameSpot. "There's stuff like Presage, there's stuff like dungeons and raids up there. All of that stuff feels like stuff that you could only find in Destiny. And every time we do something, there are articles written about it, and people say, 'You gotta complete this game. Look how cool this thing is.' And then you get into Destiny, and you're like, 'Where's the stuff that I saw people playing on Twitch? Where's this?' And instead you're playing a much more linear sort of classic shooter-style campaign.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

The Halloween series is as old as modern horror. Just like the genre itself, though, Michael Myers can't and won't die. He's once again facing off against Laurie Strode who, when last we saw her, was fleeing as a burning house collapsed around the unkillable killer.Originally set to release in October 2020, Halloween Kills was delayed almost exactly a year to October 15, 2021. The film premiered just last night at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, and reviews of the second film of this new trilogy (and 12th installment in the franchise) are starting to roll out.Reviews are still early for Halloween Kills, so there's plenty of time for critical consensus to change. They're mixed right now, with most of the reviews in the positive-to-middling range.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Wario has transitioned from a platformer antagonist in Super Mario Land 2 to platforming antihero in the Wario Land series to indie game developer in the WarioWare series. In WarioWare: Get It Together, the character comes full circle with a microgame collection that loosely goes back to his platforming roots and brings his own original characters along for the ride. It's a much different WarioWare experience, and the new twist is mostly for the better. If you've played any prior WarioWare games, you have a basic idea of what to expect in Get it Together. Wario and his cadre of weirdos have created a series of "microgames" that only last a handful of seconds. You'll find yourself plopped onto a game screen with an instruction consisting of no more than a few words, meaning you have to figure out the goal and execute the right action with quick-thinking and sharp reaction times. These microgames are then thrown into a blender, demanding quick responses one after another in a gauntlet of zany action. It's a formula that has been fun since Mega Microgames on the Game Boy Advance, and it still works exceptionally well--and maybe even better--with this new take on the concept. The twist in Get It Together is that all of the microgames involve some degree of character platforming. While previous WarioWare games might have simply had you press the A button at the right moment to manipulate an on-screen device, in Get It Together you'll always be controlling a character. Characters include Wario, complete with his Wario Land-style shoulder slam, along with all of the WarioWare-specific characters who have been introduced throughout the series' history. As a story device, they've all been sucked into their own video game which is being plagued by bugs.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

As the first major original JRPG on new consoles and the latest installment of a very long-running series, Tales of Arise comes with a lot of expectations attached. Arise sets out to refresh its visual presentation and gameplay to appeal to a new audience, but it also tries its best to retain what has made the Tales series so beloved among its longtime fans: fun characters, fast-paced combat, and an epic sense of scale. While it manages to succeed admirably at most of what it tries to do, a few shortcomings keep it from being the new standard-bearer for RPGs to come.300 years ago, the planet Dahna was invaded by the people of their neighboring star, Rena, and crumbled beneath the might of the Renans' advanced technology and knowledge. Since their conquest, the Renans have destroyed the once-vibrant Dahnan culture and enslaved the planet's people. One day, a nameless, amnesiac slave known only as Iron Mask finds himself caught up in a supply train hijacking by rebel forces--and discovers that the freight is a Renan woman with a strange curse. As he gets swept up in a Dahnan rebellion, Iron Mask discovers new powers, his true name--Alphen--and a connection to the Renan girl, Shionne. But this tiny slave rebellion grows into something much bigger. The beginning of Tales of Arise is a marked departure from the chipper banter and adventuring most Tales games lead off with. With heavy topics like slavery and oppression taking center stage in the narrative, the overall tone of Arise's story for the first several hours is quite dour, drilling into you the sheer misery and desperation of the Dahnan people. Fortunately, once your party fills out, the familiar Tales party dynamics come back in full force, with characters' personalities bouncing off each other in numerous entertaining dialogue exchanges. The rapport among your teammates--and watching their interactions change as they go through individual character arcs--is a major draw, and you'll find yourself eager to keep playing just to see the team react to the latest turn of events around the campfire or complain about the latest broken dungeon elevator.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 developer Ninja Theory has been revealing tidbits of information about the upcoming game, and the latest tweet from the studio shows just how far it's willing to go to achieve fashionable accuracy."Sometimes to create, you must first destroy," Ninja Theory tweeted as someone at the studio took a blowtorch to some leather material that looks similar to the costume that Senua actress and video editor Melina Juergens wore recently.Sometimes to create, you must first destroy 🔥Experimenting with textural effects on clothing. pic.twitter.com/a90eRM54ac — Ninja Theory (@NinjaTheory) September 6, 2021It's not a video of the office pyromaniac in action--probably--but a demonstration of how Ninja Theory plans to use real-world assets in its games, creating a library of scorched materials that it can reference when needed. "It's high-quality scans like this that will help us reach an amazing level of detail in our games," the developer explained in a separate tweet that showed off the digital replica.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

PUBG creator Brendan Greene AKA PlayerUnknown has left PUBG Studios and is now working on a wildly ambitious-sounding game at his studio PlayerUnknown Productions. Greene shared more details on this project in an interview with GamesBeat, saying the idea is to create a metaverse, of sorts, and give people a new place to exist in a game world that is the size of the Earth."We want to give people a new place to live, because this one has some issues," Greene said of the new game, which is being made under the working title Artemis. Greene didn't want to say the word metaverse, but it sounds like that's what he is trying to achieve."I don't want to say that word. I've been thinking long and hard about this. I watched Ready Player One and I thought, 'Holy sh**, that's what I want to make,'" he said.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Those often pay off in big ways, like with the Wii and the Switch, and others… not so much. Nintendo has created tons of its own weird experiences and devices over the years, and the best weird Nintendo experiences have also come via third-party companies making devices that work with the system. We've rounded up 15 of them, ranging from unique and creative add-ons to pieces of plastic that just had us scratching our heads. For more on Nintendo, check out the best Switch exclusives, as well as the best Switch games for kids and the best multiplayer Switch games.Game Boy Camera and Game Boy PrinterGame Boy CameraIt's hard to imagine today if you're younger, but there was a time when everyone didn't have a camera in their pockets at all times and cell phones were only for making phone calls. Nintendo decided the best way to correct that was the Game Boy Camera, a game cartridge and camera combination that plugged in just like any other game. It could take pictures in such low resolution that they looked like security camera snapshots from an underground criminal compound, but it sure was cool to have a working camera in your Game Boy. Paired with the Game Boy Printer, you could print out little stickers of your favorite photos after doctoring them to be as silly as possible.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Electronic Arts is reportedly considering using Unreal Engine for Mass Effect 5 instead of its own proprietary Frostbite Engine. An EA job listing for a technical director for the game appeared and states that the company is looking for candidates with experience working with Unreal.VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb has also confirmed through his own sources that EA is willing to explore every avenue when it comes to the technology for a new Mass Effect game. The primary reason for EA to stick with Frostbite is to save money, as the company would have to license Unreal from Epic Games.Additionally, it appears that EA wants to go all in on visual technology during this new generation. When full scale development for Mass Effect 5 reportedly starts in 2023, Frostbite could potentially be far behind Unreal in terms of capability. EA could also be simply looking at Unreal to see what Frostbite needs in order to achieve what it wants for Mass Effect 5.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

The synergy between character classes is one of the things that makes the battle against hordes of xenomorphs exciting in Aliens: Fireteam Elite. With the start of the game's first live content season, developer Cold Iron is adding a new brand of Marine to the battlefield: the Phalanx class. We got a chance to go hands-on with the Phalanx ahead of its release and see what it adds to your fireteam. As the name suggests, the Phalanx Marine sports a deployable shield that turns it into a front-line fighter, acting as your team's tank. The shield can block melee damage and incoming shots, allowing you to better survive some close encounters with both alien enemies and the synthetic soldiers that populate the campaign. It's a trooper that's great for drawing fire and attracting a crowd, so the rest of your three-player squad can avoid being overwhelmed and pick off enemies with a little more space to breathe. The Phalanx's primary ability is a shield you can toggle on and off, pulling it out to block damage and putting it away on your back--there's no cooldown on this thing. When you pull the shield out, it allows you to absorb attacks without getting hurt, so long as they're coming from in front of you. That incentivizes you to hold down chokepoints and wade into narrow corridors. As lead systems and combat designer Chris Matz explained, the shield is particularly great for taking on the synthetic enemies in Aliens: Fireteam Elite--the shield specifically makes it a lot easier to deal with gunfire, giving you the ability to be a little more mobile while fighting bad guys who shoot back.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com
