Epic already gives away free games every week, but starting next Thursday, you'll be able to snag a freebie every day. To celebrate the holidays, the Epic free games program is kicking into high gear with 15 free games in 15 days. Epic ran a similar promotion last year featuring 12 free games. All you need to take part in the holiday giveaways is a free Epic account.At this time, it's unclear which games will be featured in the promotion. The first "mystery" game goes live on December 17 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. If Epic follows the same formula as last year, we'll know what the next free game will be a day in advance. Super Meat Boy Forever has been a long time coming, having been first announced in 2014. Now the tough-as-nails platformer has finally set a release date. As part of The Game Awards, a new trailer debuted announcing that the game is coming to PC via the Epic Games Store on December 23.The brief trailer consisted mostly of gameplay footage--surprisingly without the many, many deaths that define the game--along with some cute animated segments starring Meat Boy, Bandage Girl, and Dr. Fetus. It's now available to preorder, at 10% off until it launches. It will regularly cost $20, but the discount brings it down to $18.The date is only for the Epic Games Store, and the trailer was released through Epic's channel, so other platform release targets have not yet been announced. No release date has been given on Switch, so it appears the plans to release first on Switch may have changed. FX's Shogun is finally back on track--as announced at Disney Investor Day on December 10--after being greenlit way back in summer 2018, and then almost immediately subsequently delayed in pre-production to build in extra time to polish scripts and figure out logistics for filming the 10-episode series. In 2018, the network was hailing the show as its largest international scale production, with filming in the U.K. and Japan.Two years later, FX has not lost any bravado or enthusiasm for the series. John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions said that the adaptation of James Clavell's beloved epic saga, Shogun, is back on track and set to be "one of the most sweeping, sophisticated, and adult series FX has ever created." Although not set in italics, "adult" is a key word here--FX describes the show's world as being "set within the riveting and real Game of Thrones that was feudal Japan."The Game of Thrones gauntlet being thrown down is not just aspirational thinking. Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale is one the most acclaimed shows of recent years, and Season 4 is set to premiere next year. Ahead of that, it's been announced that the show has also been renewed for its fifth season.The Season 5 renewal was revealed at Disney Investor Day on December 10. It's unknown when it will hit Hulu, given Season 4 hasn't finished production yet and hasn't received a confirmed date beyond sometime in 2021, but it obviously won't be before 2022. Servant, a psychological thriller from M. Developer EA Motive has dropped a new update for Star Wars: Squadrons on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The free batch of content, all part of Update 4.0, adds new ships, fixes bugs, and introduces custom matches, among other things. The patch notes are outlined below.Two new ships are available to pilot: the New Republic's B-Wing bomber and the TIE Defender starfighter on the Empire's side. While both ships will be able to use all the components found within their respective classes, the two do have unique aspects about them. The B-Wing has a gyro-cockpit and swiveling wings while the TIE Defender has enhanced shielding. This will help differentiate the two ships from the plethora of other available bombers and starfighters.Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi variants will also be available.Perhaps one of the most attention-grabbing additions of Update 4.0 for Star Wars: Squadrons is the introduction of custom matches to its online multiplayer. This feature works just as expected. Players can set up matches with their friends on any one of the seven available maps, applying modifiers and restrictions to create a truly custom gameplay experience. Pixar's Soul is nearing its debut on December 25, and the animation studio is offering a first look at the movie with a new clip. Soul tells the story of jazz musician Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), whose big break is cut short when his soul becomes separated from his body. Season 2 of Shudder's hit horror show Creepshow might have been delayed, but that doesn't mean 2020 has been without some anthology scares. Following Halloween's animated Creepshow special, a new holiday special hits the service next week, and the trailer has been released.A Creepshow Holiday Special features a single hour-long episode, titled "Shapeshifters Anonymous," written and directed by showrunner Greg Nicotero. It focuses on a man who believes he transforms into a terrifying murderous creature at night and joins a support group for people with similar shapeshifting afflictions. But they haven't counted on Santa and his gun-toting gang who want to put a stop to the group. The beginning of Fortnite's latest season saw 40 non-playable characters scattered around the map for players to find. Every NPC can give players quests and items, and some can even join your team and help you fight. This is a big change for the battle royale--it's something Epic Games has been working towards for some time.Computer-controlled characters--including bot players, Marvel heroes, recruitable henchmen, and more--have continuously been added to the game over the past couple of years. Epic has used these characters to help diversify the experience players have from match to match. The studio is leaning heavily into using these characters, but players want more from them.One of Season 5's NPCsEpic Games has inserted some sort of computer-controlled character into many of Fortnite's seasons, especially after the launch of Chapter 2. They've roamed the map randomly looking for players to kill as the Marauders, acted as security for Midas and crew in Season 2, and most recently supported Dr. Doom and Iron Man (who are also AI-controlled) at their respective named locations during Season 4. Ubisoft has released a new patch for Hyper Scape on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S that introduces crossplay, as well as various gameplay adjustments and quality-of-life improvements. The full patch notes for Update 2.5 are outlined below.Update 2.5's headlining feature is the addition of crossplay, which is undergoing a soft launch for the time being. Full crossplay between consoles has been enabled, meaning PlayStation and Xbox players can jump into matches together. The situation is slightly different for PC users, who can still play with console players but will be matched into the PC queue instead. This means PC users who have a team full of other console players will be playing with other PC players for now. There's no word on when crossplay leaves this sort of early access period.Along with crossplay comes various adjustments for Hyper Scapes's game modes. Team Deathmatch has had its win conditions altered to lengthen matches, while Arcadium is receiving Navigation Pick-Up items.
