It's now 2021, and in these glorious days of ray tracing and DLSS technology and such, it's relatively easy for the average gamer to build a rig, grab a 4K display, and be on their merry way. But more pixels isn't necessarily the winning move when thinking about what to look for in a gaming monitor, and all the graphical horsepower in the world doesn't mean much if you can't display it in its full glory. There's an entire alphabet soup of monitor technologies to consider when choosing the display that's going to be your new best friend going forward, and prettiest or more advanced doesn't always mean best for your experience or your wallet. If you're looking to buy a new monitor in 2021, here's what you should know about monitor technologies in order to find the best display for you.Screen resolutions and sizesScreen resolution is perhaps the most obvious feature of any monitor panel, and it's likely the first setting many PC gamers go running to as soon as they start a new game. A monitor's screen resolution represents the number of horizontal pixels x the number of vertical pixels they display. Now, as most PC gamers know, PC games support a slew of potential resolutions ranging from 640x480--i.e. your average, ancient CRT monitor, and probably what you played Oregon Trail on in grade school--all the way up to 8K (7680x4320)--which will probably be awesome when there's more than just random nature documentaries on YouTube running it natively. Despite the wild list that comes up when starting a new PC title, though, there are four benchmark resolutions you're most likely to see when choosing a gaming monitor:Common screen resolutionsPixels720p1280x7201080p1920x10801440p2560x14404K3840x2160These screen resolutions perfectly conform to the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio that the vast majority of monitor panels are manufactured under and that the vast majority of modern video content--gaming or otherwise--is formatted with. Even among these resolutions, there are some considerations to make. 720p monitors aren't long for this world, but those displays are definitely still out there. For one, they're relatively cheap, and more than that, for folks running super low-spec PC rigs, 720p is a perfectly viable step down to give your CPU/GPU some breathing room while still producing a high-definition image. On the opposite end, 4K resolution is the current gold standard--for now--but running a game at 4K requires a lot of horsepower, and not all 4K monitor technologies are up to the task. Right in the middle is 1080p, which is currently the most common resolution for desktops and laptops the world over.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

As part of Sucker Punch's announcement of the Ghost of Tsushima movie from John Wick's Chad Stahelski, the studio also revealed a new sales figure and more for the game. In a blog post, game director Nate Fox revealed that the PS4 exclusive that also plays on PS5 through backwards compatibility has sold 6.5 million copies.Ghost of Tsushima being a success story for sales is no surprise, as the game eclipsed all others from Sony's first-party studios to become the fastest-selling new IP history on PS4. As of November 2020, the game had sold 5 million copies. That's a huge number and makes it quickly one of Sony's best-selling exclusives of the past generation. For comparison, PS4 games God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn each sold more than 10 million copies, but those milestones came later in their respective lifecycles. Another PS4 exclusive, The Last of Us Part II, sold 4 million copies in its first week.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Bungie is rolling out a new change to how it balances teams in Destiny 2's PvP mode, the Crucible, as part of this week's Iron Banner event. The adjustment doesn't change Destiny 2's matchmaking system, but does adjust how players are assigned to teams once they're in a lobby, in hopes of making matches a bit less lopsided. The developer detailed the change in its This Week at Bungie blog post, where it explained how things will work in Iron Banner and Iron Banner: Freelance starting today. The new algorithm for choosing teams, Bungie said, is a little bit like a schoolyard picking system like you'd see as two team captains each take turns picking from a pool of kids to join their teams. The algorithm looks at the skill of players in the lobby and tries to assign them to teams in a balanced way, placing the top player on team one, the second- and third-best players on team two, the fourth-best player on team one, and so on.That's different from the balancing system Bungie was using previously, which would try to make both teams have the same average level of player skill. The result was that teams were often lopsided. This was especially apparent if you were to play multiple games in a Crucible playlist--you'd often see the same players matching with you and getting assigned to teams in roughly the same way, first on one side, and then the other. The result was a series of swings where a player might get clobbered in one match and win handily in the next, while playing with roughly the same group.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Metacritic, a sister-site of GameSpot, has published its annual rankings of game publishers. These rankings apply to games released in 2020, and the top publisher of the year may surprise you. Even more surprising are some of the names that ended up low on the list.48 publishers' games were compiled for the ranking, which used several factors such as average game Metascore, percentage of products with "good" reviews, and percentage of products with "bad" reviews to determine the final total. This way of factoring in both the stinkers and the hits meant that even the smallest publishers had a shot of reaching the top spots. Several did, in fact, including Annapurna Interactive, Aksys Games, and No More Robots.Sega took the top spot this year, averaging an 81.6 average review score and narrowly beating out Annapurna in terms of total points factoring into the ranking. It benefited from the continued success of the Yakuza series as well as Persona 4 Golden hitting PC. Capcom, Sony, and Activision Blizzard rounded out the top five.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Writer Gary Whitta is very close to achieving one of his dreams: making a sequel to the 1984 movie The Last Starfighter. During a Twitch stream, Whitta revealed a sizzle reel, concept art, music, and the working title of the film. The Last Starfighters (working title) has not been given the green light. However, Whitta--working alongside The Last Starfighter writer Jonathan R. Betuel--believes that's right around the corner. "We are, I believe, very very close--closer than anyone has ever been to making a new Last Starfighter fighter movie, like right on the one yard line," Whitta explained. "After pushing the boulder uphill for years we are very, very, very close. I can't really say anything more. Other than that, you know because it's there's all stuff happening behind the scenes now, like there's things I can't tell you but we are very, very close, I believe it will happen."Whitta explained that this movie would be a sequel--not a reboot, revamp, or reimagining. Betuel and Whitta became friends and quickly realized when it came to the movie, they were both on the same page: "We wanted to do a sequel that kept the original in canon, and which, which continued the original storyline and honored the original."Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

The latest trailer for the PvP heist game Hood: Outlaws & Legends details the fourth and final character class, the Mystic. The class seems tuned to support, though it's not without its share of combat abilities as well. The Mystic is an ex-inquisitor who uses a flail as his primary weapon. He can regenerate his stamina faster than other characters, so he can win battles of attrition. He also has a poison ability that saps opponents' stamina. His Ultimate ability is Instinct, which allows him to see through walls for a short time and heal himself and nearby allies. Altogether, the trailer explains, he's well-suited for healing and crowd control.Within that context, though, the Mystic can be customized to suit your needs with different loadouts. Your perks could make your grenades heal allies instead of poison enemies, convert damage to health to withstand a battle even longer, or increase everyone's movement speed if you sprint alongside them.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com
