Plants vs Zombies 2 wasn't what a lot of fans expected out of a sequel to the classic strategy game, as it was rife with microtransactions that many players said felt like hitting a free-to-play wall. The original producer of the game, Matt Johnston, has opened up about what was going on behind the scenes as those decisions were being made.In an interview with MinnMax, Johnston said that the seed of microtransactions in Plants vs Zombies 2 was part of its original design, with the idea of plant food. This was intended to be a leg up for players who were struggling, as a way to overcome a particular obstacle. In the midst of development, though, his team was suddenly asked to make a slice of the game playable for upper management, for reasons he didn't know at the time. And while the team made the demo, it's at this point that he first expressed some reservations about following a F2P model."We don't think that's possible without breaking the game," Johnston explained. "The game is this interwoven, meticulously hand-balanced set of interdependent components. Every plant has a zombie that it depends on for that balance. As long as Star Wars has been around, fans have been dying to own their very own working lightsaber, and following a surprise announcement by Disney, that could soon be a reality. During a Disney Parks press event on April 8 to announce the opening date of Avengers Campus, Disney also revealed a working prototype for a lightsaber that will likely end up for sale by the company sometime in the near future.As Disney's Parks, Experiences, and Products chairman Josh D'Amaro wrapped up the press conference, he reportedly ended his remarks by unveiling the device and simply teasing, "It's real."No pictures were allowed to be taken of the event and Disney has yet to publicly release anything about the device. Netflix is making a new limited series based on the thriller The 39 Steps, and the streaming company has hired Benedict Cumberbatch to star in it, according to Deadline.Cumberbatch will play the lead, a man who gets mixed up in a global conspiracy. The series is inspired by the 1915 novel that was adapted by Alfred Hitchcock for a movie in 1935. The new limited series will be set in the present day.Edward Berger is set to direct The 39 Steps from a script by The Revenant's Mark L. Smith. It's a re-teaming of sorts, as Berger wrote the TV show Patrick Melrose starring Cumberbatch. A new Outriders update will start rolling out today on PC and PlayStation consoles that will re-enable crossplay between the two. Xbox players will have to wait as developer People Can Fly is "a little bit delayed" deploying the patch. As a result, crossplay between Xbox and other platforms has been disabled.With the release of this patch, Crossplay between PlayStation and PC is now possible. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has received another update that adds Season 2's final operator, Karla Rivas, to the in-game store. At the same time, however, the newly announced Gunsmith Customs feature has been temporarily disabled.Developer Treyarch Studios announced on Twitter that the team is performing maintenance on the feature. Until the tinkering is done, Gunsmith Customs will remain offline. Treyarch said it will "update everyone when [the feature] is back up."Gunsmith Customs gives Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players more control over weapon customization. The feature allows for attachments from weapon blueprints to be interchanged with the seam weapon type to create individualized blueprints. Chucky is the spin-off show from the long-running Child's Play horror series. It's currently shooting and is set to arrive later this year on the Syfy and USA Network.The franchise kicked off in 1988 with the original Child's Play. The movie was written by 24-year-old film student Don Mancini, and directed by Tom Holland (not the one that plays Spider-Man), who had previously helmed the hit vampire comedy Fright Night. The movie focused on Andy, a boy who is given a doll named Chucky by his mom. Unfortunately, the toy has been possessed by the spirit of a dead serial killer Charles Lee Ray, and embarks on a bloody killing spree. The film's mix of dark humor and inventive slasher thrills helped make it a success and launched a franchise.Since then there have been a six sequels and a reboot. The series took a more comedic and self-referential tone with the fourth film, Bride of Chucky, and Mancini took over directing duties on the series from the fifth movie, Seed of Chucky. Outriders can be a tough game once you start to get into it. Despite access to a host of different ludicrous superpowers, you're still human at the end of the day, and if you get nailed with enough bullets or slashed by enough monster claws, you're going to die. You can mitigate some of that incoming damage with Outriders' cover shooter mechanics, but because of the way most character classes recover health, you need to be constantly slaying foes. If you're not using equipment mods to help with that, you're kind of playing the game wrong.There's a pretty deep and robust modding system in Outriders, but it's easy to overlook. First, when you're introduced to the system, you don't really need it yet. Second, you go through so much gear in Outriders that you might be thinking, "I'll wait till I get the really good stuff before I start making changes." Unfortunately, that's a mistake--by not modding your gear, you're likely making the game much harder than it needs to be.Gear mods can give you significant perks for your armor and guns, making your abilities and status effects a lot more powerful. The movie tells the story of a group of mercenaries raiding a casino in a zombie-infested Las Vegas. The event has since ended, but you can still catch the VOD over on the Netflix Twitch channel. Viewers were asked to crack a code to register for the Tuesday event. The video goes on for about an hour and features security cameras overlooking different parts of a casino--presumably the one that mercenaries are breaking into in the film. The video itself isn't terribly eventful. Zombies wander around, and occasionally a dumb human in a hazmat suit or with a camera wanders in and gets eaten.Before Zack Snyder was known for his "cut" of Justice League and making Batman say a swear, one of his big breakout films was his remake of Dawn of the Dead. He wanted to make a second zombie movie, and Army of the Dead was announced in 2007. It never happened due to financing issues, and then Snyder got busy bringing DC Comics' biggest characters to life in movies like Watchmen and Justice League. Army of the Dead officially began filming in 2019 when Netflix picked up the movie rights from Warner Bros. Please don't be mad at me, I haven't played Diablo 2 since middle school. And at that time, my friends (who were also high-level StarCraft and Warcraft players) basically carried me through most of the experience and the Lord of Destruction expansion. However, Diablo 2 showed me the satisfaction you can get out of a good hack-and-slash RPG, tearing through mobs (often with friends), using different classes and builds, and being smart about how to handle the tougher encounters.After spending some time with the technical alpha, I now see how Diablo 2 Resurrected delivers that exact experience all over again. It really is Diablo 2 with a fresh coat of HD paint, running without a hitch on modern systems. It plays identically to the original game and preserves that experience one-to-one, but with a few quality-of-life improvements and some major visual enhancements that don't affect the core gameplay systems. This is essentially what Blizzard did with StarCraft Remastered back in 2017--the same iconic game looking real fresh.And just like StarCraft Remastered, Diablo 2 Resurrected lets you swap between the visual styles instantly with a keystroke. Both graphical modes run simultaneously, and switching between them is seamless. While it's not much more than a novelty to scratch that nostalgic itch, seeing the original sprites and choppy animations in a 4:3 aspect ratio helps you appreciate the work that's been done with this remaster. First shown off during the March ID@Xbox showcase, Soup Pot is the debut title of Manila developer Chikon Club. The adorable-looking cooking game captured my attention with the reveal that it possesses no fail states (a rarity for cooking games), so I caught up with Chikon Club's Trina Pagtakhan and Gwendelyn Foster to talk about how the game grades the player without failing them.Eventually, our conversation turned to other aspects of Soup Pot, such as the game's connection to real-world events. Soup Pot sees you play as someone stuck indoors during a pandemic, teaching yourself how to cook in order to pass the time and have something to eat. Your only human interaction are the chat rooms for your livestreams that document your efforts and conversations with the people delivering ingredients to your door. You also fill your downtime by scrolling through a fictional cooking-based social media site called Cookbook, where you'll remain apprised of what's going on in the world. So even though Soup Pot is a cute, humor-focused exploration of Filipino and Southeast Asian cuisine, there's a meaningful underlying narrative thread to the game too.My conversation with Pagtakhan and Foster is transcribed below. PUBG has been updated to version 11.1, which brings back a fan-favorite map, introduces an emergency pickup tool, and makes changes to the ranked reward structure. The patch is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, in addition to the earlier PC release.This season reintroduces the Paramo map, a 3x3 map set in the South American highlands. This revised iteration of Paramo has more field cover and a dynamic world system that modifies major landmarks. You can also use a new Emergency Pickup item, which you can deploy to signal an airplane to pick you up within 60 seconds. The item is conspicuous and heavy and will attract enemy attention, but you can use it strategically for emergency situations or for an escape behind enemy territory.Starting with this PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds season, ranked seasons will last two months. That also means they won't be exactly parallel with Survivor Passes, and so the new rewards structure has been shifted to accommodate this change.
